Please join us on Sunday, August 19, 2018 in Corktown for World Humanitarian Day. We’ll be at Bobcat Bonnie’s in Corktown on Sunday, August 19, from 4:30pm-6:30pm. Please RSVP and we’ll see you there!
On August 19, 2003, UN Representative Sergio Vieira de Mello and 21 humanitarian aid workers were killed at the United Nations Headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq by terrorists. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a Resolution to mark August 19 as World Humanitarian Day. This day is commemorated around the world in honor of the 22 humanitarian aid workers that died that day in Iraq and to raise awareness within the global community about the sacrifices humanitarian aid workers make everyday to assist our world’s most vulnerable populations.
This year’s theme is #NotATarget — everyday millions of civilians, including humanitarian aid workers are victims of abuse, violence, and countless heinous human rights violations during times of armed conflict. Just this week, a school bus filled with children was bombed in Yemen. Dozens of people were killed, including 29 children.
Join us in Detroit as we honor the work of humanitarian aid workers and build awareness around the importance of protecting civilians during armed conflict. We will have speakers, networking, and great discussion on how we can all act to make a difference. All are welcome.
