Things You Can Do Locally to Support Global Efforts

As the Greater Detroit Chapter of the United Nations Association continues its mission and mandate, it relishes individual efforts made within the community to make a positive impact on cultures in other parts of the world. Most citizens have the desire to help and make a difference, but often the hindrance lies in not knowing how. Here is an easy guide on the things you can do locally to support global initiatives:

  1. Educate yourself on important issues

We often encounter news about certain things happening across the world, but our knowledge is often limited by the tidbits of information that come our way. By properly educating yourself on these issues, you become part of the global community that carries the real truth, and subsequently, you get primed to be an agent of information dissemination.

  1. Donate to a worthy cause

Donating is probably the most known and popular way of helping people on the other side of the globe, and its practice can be seen across cultures.  Donations can be monetary or in kind, and the needs differ from case to case. Some people, though willing, often walk away from making a donation because of the low amount or quality of their intended donation. We must keep in mind, however, that a small amount goes a long way.

  1. Volunteer in local events

If you don’t have monetary or material aid to give, you can also give your time and effort through volunteering. Volunteering for charity fundraisers, or volunteering as a team member in relief efforts is a great way to help those who are in need globally.

  1. Raise awareness

You can support global efforts without even leaving your couch. By using your social media voice, you can raise awareness on vital issues that need global attention. Just make sure that the information you are providing is accurate and up-to-date.
