Social Media & Citizenship -- Future of Journalism

Distinguished journalist, Jose Vargas will examine the state of professional journalism, how news is collected and disseminated, how the boundaries between citizen and journalist often overlap, and the implications that all of these changes have for the future of journalism. 

Vargas embodies the ongoing revolution in the field. Formerly a reporter about digital media and politics for the venerable Washington Post, he recently became Technology and Innovations Editor at the Huffington Post.  This lecture, “The Brave New World of Journalism,” is part of the Center for the Study of Citizenship’s Citizen Media project.

Ryan works to develop sustainable Urban Farms which produce food of the highest nutritional quality with little to no environmental impact. Ryan believes that urban Farming has lost a lot of its meaning because of constant media coverage of less than productive “Urban Farms.”

In Ryan's words, "We consume $36M / month in food here in SE Michigan – it all comes from outside Michigan and the money leaves as well. I am interested in creating an umbrella operation which incorporates multiple Farm sites throughout neighborhoods into one organized production operation to meet the food needs of SouthEast Michigan residents and to develop a “New Agricultural Economy” in Urban areas."

The "Intentional Community" is a budding grassroots initiative seeking to transform one of the most devastated residential blocks in all of Detroit, located on Robinwood street just north of the Innate Healing Center, into a completely self-sustaining eco-village/urban farm community.

This is a very worthwhile, creative initiative that is just at its early stages!

Young Professionals for International Cooperation of Michigan and Detroit presents:

An evening of socializing, poetry, drinks, and free food.

This will be The United Nations Association-Young Professionals for International Cooperation's official KICK-OFF MIXER.

Come after work to the top of the Renaissance Center on the 36th floor to the Renaissance Club and enjoy a view from the top of the city.

*We will briefly, repeat briefly introduce you to who the Young Professionals for International Cooperation are and what our goals are for outreaching to the city of Detroit and beyond.

This evening will be filled with fun, drinks, and free food. We will have an open mic for poets and writers to showcase their talent and work.

We will be accepting donations for our school supplies drive. We will dispense the school supplies to the city of Detroit children the week before school.
